For the Hard Holiday Moments

Fighting the Hard Holiday Moments

by Anna Ferraro | December 10, 2018

I don’t know about you, but it’s been an interesting holiday season for me and my family.

We normally invest a lot of time and energy practicing and performing music for audiences far and wide - sharing the joy of the season.

But behind the spotlights and the stage curtains, life is happening for us too.

A car accident, the death of a close friend, some sickness, and some high-stress job demands threaten to spiral our season into strain and stress. And then the calendar tells us to “smile and go play another concert.”

Well, this season, for all these hard moments “behind the scenes”, God is whispering His peace to us through every carol we sing, hear, and play.

In moments of darkness, we pray...

O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
- From “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”

In moments of doubt, we say...

See amid the winter snow, born for us on earth below,
See the tender Lamb appear, promised from eternal years!
Hail, thou ever blessed morn! Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!
Sing through all Jerusalem, “Christ is born in Bethlehem!”
- From “See Amid the Winter Snow”

In moments of chaos, we realize...

God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay;
Remember Christ, our Saviour, was born on Christmas day,
To save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray.
O tidings of comfort and joy!
- From “God Rest Ye”

In moments of confusion, we pray...

O come, Thou Wisdom from on high
And order all things, far and nigh
To us the path of knowledge show
And cause us in her ways to go.
- From “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”

In moments of discontent, we recall...

How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven.
- From “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

And at the end of the day, the beauty of God’s redemption of us beams beyond the blur of everything else, and shines as a light into our darkness.

So in every moment, we worship...

Hail, the heavy born Prince of Peace! Hail, the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings, ris’n with healing in His wings!
Mild, He lays His glories by, born that man no more may die.
Born to raise the sons of earth, born to give them second birth.
Hark, the herald angels sing, “glory to the newborn King!”
- From “Hark, the Herald”
